Donation from Karl Ludwig Giesecke (1761-1833) to Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840) in 1818. Received with the purchase of the collection of Blumenbach in 1841; Blumenbach was Professor of Natural History at the University Göttingen from 1778 until 1840 and first curator at the Royal Academic Museum.
Named for its blue colour.
